Interesting that that it is called a hens and chicks cactus - - - we have a plant around here that is called that because it puts out little tiny bud plants all the time.
The cactus is supposed to do that, but it grows very slowly. If you enlarge the picture you can see a "chick" starting on the back. Also, it didn't have the bud on the right when we got it "all those years ago."
This is what the poets mean when they say the desert blooms.
